An inevitable conflict that was due in time to transform into a war, the Civil War was influenced by societal interests, economic changes along with political disagreements. Together, these influences sparked a nation into a great divide that ended in what is known as the deadliest war in American history. Just In the aftermath of the industrial revolution, the Civil War was ignited due to economic changes. By 1830, the most profitable crop known was cotton. Representing the south, cotton was the most exported crop in the Union at the time. An economic booster for the south, it essentially lead to the south’s dependence on plantations. With cotton in high demand, demanded the need for more labor. Those who worked the fields, mainly slaves, endured hard labor and harsh environments. Many slaves were imported, or needed, to meet the high demands for the most important exported crop. However, by this time, the north was already established as an industrial economy. In the north, there was a need for labor, but not necessarily the need for slaves. As an industrial economy, more factories were opened and more ways of transportation were needed to be built such as railroads and steamboats. A southern newspaper out of Augustus County, The Staunton Spectator, offered several articles that gave insight as to what the conditions were like after the war had ended. One article, â€Å"Grape Culture† explained the possible profit one could obtain by adding grapes to their normal crops. The most ironic note in the story is that Whooping Cranes were once almost extinct, but are now a viable population. We might wonder if humans who mate for life are as lucky. We learn all of this in a just a few pages, because the writer uses what we now about the cranes and what most people know about the controversial subject of euthanasia is also used. The description of the tall and stately cranes hints at how the author see the two people, dignified. This is a mainstay of the euthanasia controversy, that people have the right to die with dignity. We find out how old the couple is by the conversation. The man says that he has been coming for years and never seen a Whooping Crane. When she says they make the little birds look like clowns makes him mention that he could use some laughter. This prompts her to wonder if this is the right things to do. She says she feels responsible. It is then that we get a fuller picture of this couple, who have, apparently, been married a very long time. He answers her statement that she feels responsible with a list of all the things he cannot do, and we realize that his health is not very good.
